The Effect of Bad First Semester Law School Grades

The Effect of Bad First Semester Law School GradesThe Effect of Bad First Semester Law School GradesWhen its January, it means one thing to law students Grades are coming in. If your first-semester law school grades are everything you hoped and dreamed, awesome For most people, especially 1Ls, thats elend the case, unfortunately. The forced curve in 1L classes means that a huge number of law students are getting grades theyve never seen before. Bs? Cs? Ds? Fs? Its all possible. Beyond just the shock of not automatically getting As law students have another worry Will these grades totally sink my legal career? Its a legitimate question, but theres no reason to panic. Many successful lawyers have been where you are right now and lived to tell the tale. Here are three suggestions for coping with disappointing first semester grades in law school What Happened? While its possible to recover from terrible grades and have a successful legal career, its easier to find a job when you grad uate if your grades arent consistently terrible. So, its time to figure out what went wrong first semester and correct it going forward. Step one is to get, and carefully examine, your exam answers, comparing them in form and content to any sample answers your prof handed out. Once youve done this, set up a meeting with your old professor to see what advice they can offer. (Some professors are reluctant to engage in such a conversation, but many are willing to help if you approach them with a constructive attitude and make it clear youre interested in improving your performance going forward, not in arguing about your grade from last semester.) Take any advice to heart and make changes in how you study this semester. If your professors arent willing to help, look for other resources. Your school might offer peer mentors or an academic support program. Worst case, consider hiring a law school tutor for a few sessions. Any input you can get is valuable, so dont be shy Ask around for help. Change How You Prepare If your grades werent great, its a sign that your preparation wasnt effective, so you need to change your approach going forward. There are lots of books on taking law school exams, so you can probably find one that makes sense to you. But dont expect different results if you prepare exactly as you did the first semester Its time to change it up. Focus on Your Career It might sound counterintuitive, but one way of handling disappointing grades is simply to ignore them and turn your attention to other matters. One of my law school roommates knew she wanted to do public interest work, where grades are less of a focus. So she simply didnt look at her grades She had a friend check to make sure she passed all of her classes, but then she focused her energy on securing relevant internships, doing pro bono work, and making connections in the area where she wanted to work. In the end, she had tons of job options, despite a less than stellar transcript, because people in the field knew her and respected her work. If your grades arent going to get you in the door, think about what will. Can you spend time blogging on a topic of interest to you? Or meeting lawyers who work in the area by volunteering for a bar association committee or joining a pro bono project? Ultimately, time spent on such activities can pay off far more than improving your grades from a B to a B. Getting bad first-semester law school grades is a shock, but its not the end of the world. Try to improve your performance going forward, and focus on other aspects of your legal career planning to find ultimate career success

The Cheetah Bot of War

The Cheetah Bot of War The Cheetah Bot of War The Cheetah (Bot) of WarWhere possible, menschenfreundlichs have avoided sending armed humans after other armed humans to neutralize themits just too symmetrical of a situation. To avoid such confrontations, throughout the history of warfare humans haveused, among other things, dogs in place of soldiers. Against these dogs of war, the human had a chance. On occasion the dog could be outrun. When snapping at throat or lodged on arm, mans best friend could be dispatched by an armed soldier in many ways. Now the folks at Boston Dynamics, Waltham, MA, have put an end to these fallibilities of the canine. To replace the flawed dog of war, they have created the robot cheetah of war. These new beasts will not be so easy to put down. And theyll be impossible to outrun. Especially now.The Cheetah can hit speeds of 18 miles per hour on a treadmill. Image Boston DynamicsBoston Dynamics put its latest Cheetah on a treadmill and saw it hit 18 miles per hour. That set a new record for fastest legged robot, a good five miles per hour faster than the old titleholder, a biped from MIT that hit 13 mph back in 1989.The DARPA-funded Cheetah is one of many creature-inspired robots the company has developed to make life on the battlefield easier for the foot soldier. Theres the building-hopping SandFlea the wall-climbing, lizard-like RiSE and RHex, which looks something like a six-legged platypus. The Cheetahs most direct ancestor is BigDog, a four-legged canine-esque machine meant to help infantrymen haul heavy loads. The BigDog, a four-legged canine, is the Cheetahs ancestor. Image Boston DynamicsHauling loads and hauling butt are two different things. As the goal shifted, so did the designfrom pack dog to fast cat. The fastest legged robot and the fastest legged animal that shares the saatkorn name also share much of the same design, most notably in the spine. Its elasticity returns much of the energy back into the run. But the Cheetahs primary investigator, Marc Raibert, warns not to take the similarity between the Cheetah robot we built and the animal too far. We are not trying to copy the animal, just take inspiration from it. It is true that they both have four legs and use their backs to help speed up their running, but the differences are significant too most of the details are different. However different their details, both the beast and the bot face the same problem If you want to go fast, you cant go fast for long. Energetics is an organizing principle for both the robot and the animal, and for most vehicles, says Raibert. Generally, the more weight devoted to power generation and fuel, the more difficult it is to erleichterung and accelerate the system. If the Cheetah had more lung and heart, perhaps it could run longer, but it would probably have to give up some top speed. The next version of the Cheetah Robot will also have limited duration of operation to save on power weight, cooling weight, etc.Being overweight is not the only thing keeping the Cheetah from being sent out to attack. The titanium fangs and laser eyes that might make it truly terrifying to the enemy have yet to be installed. At the moment, the beast is missing a head, making the robot arguably more creepy than terrifying. It also requires an off-board hydraulic pump for power as well as a boom-like device to keep it from veering off its (as of now) rather straightforward course. But these problems are none too difficult to solve and Boston Dynamics hopes to let its sprinter run free in the out-of-doors later this year.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. We are not trying to copy the animal, just take inspiration from it.Marc Raibert, Cheetahs primary investigator, Boston Dynamics

4 Hotspots for Lies and False Information on Resumes

4 Hotspots for Lies and False Information on Resumes 4 Hotspots for Lies and False Information on Resumes Of course, it is not always easy to spot a lie, and it can take a lot of time and resources verifying each aspect of a candidates application. This means that it can make sense to adopt a more targeted approach where you focus in and scrutinize the areas where people are fruchtwein likely to lie, (hotspots) which means you are deploying your investigative resources in the fruchtwein efficient and effective way possible, hopefully increasing your lie detection rate. So, just what are the most common lies told by applicants? According to this analysis of two studies by CareerBuilder and HireRight, they are1. Exaggerating previous employment dates. HireRight found that around a third of applications include discrepancies around dates and CareerBuilder discovered that this was the third most common lie found on a resume, representing 10 percent of lies. It may seem surprising that on e of the most common type of lies is exaggerating employment dates and not exaggerating key skills, although perhaps given the massive stigma that surrounds the long-term unemployed, it isnt that surprising that this section is a hotspot for lies and false information2. Exaggerating responsibilities. This was the most common type of resume lie according to CareerBuilder (by some way), representing 38 percent of all resume lies. HireRight also found that inflating salary history or title held was one of the most common lies told. So, make sure that your verification process does some spot checking in this area.3. Falsifying degrees or certificates. Its staggering that this is one of the most common areas for lying since it is so easy for employers to check this and most employers will. Nonetheless, HireRight found a 20 percent discrepancy rate in information provided by candidates relating to their education and qualifications. CareerBuilder found that 10 percent of lies found on res umes related to their degree and 18 percent related to their skills. It goes without saying that you shouldnt take degrees or skills for granted and you should verify them.4. Companies worked for. Interestingly, CareerBuilder found that 7 percent of discrepancies that were discovered on resumes were linked to companies worked for. This is not surprising as good corporate and employer brands reflect well on a resume, and so applicants could be tempted to lie to make it appear that they have worked for a top brand. If it does happen, its likely to occur two or three jobs back as employers often only ask for a reference from a previous employer or they let the candidate choose the employer. To combat this, you might want to ask for references from two or more former employers and select which ones yourself. So, if you want to ensure that applicants do what it says on the tin, Id strongly recommend that your lie detection processes are focused around these four areas.Master the art of clo sing deals and making placements. 7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Changing Careers

7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Changing Careers 7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Changing CareersPosted November 17, 2017, by Yvette McKenzieCareer changes are becoming more and more common. Today, the average person will shift careers 5-7 timesduring their working life. The majority of the workforce will actually trade jobs every 12 months - and by your early 40s, you will have clocked up at least 10 different jobs. Changing roles is now very common. So, if youre frustrated in your current position, there are a few essential questions to ask yourself before you jump ship. Learn how to work out what really matters to you, and find a future job role that ticks all the boxes you might never know you had. Here are seven questions to ask yourself before you get started on the job change process.1 Whats more important title, salary or location?Depending on at what stage youre at in your career, you might have different priorities. When youre younger and just starting out, gaining e xperience in a desired company and a suitable job title might be more of a priority. As you progress in your career and become more settled with family and other commitments (such as a mortgage) then location and salary expectations might become more immovable. According to the National Academy of Sciences, Some people are willing to make lifestyle changes because the intrinsic rewards of following a passion or making a difference are more important than a high salary in an unenjoyable career. Consider this when planning to change careers. There is no right or wrong answer its about taking the time to think about your career priorities and planning accordingly.2 What do I really appreciate when it comes to company and culture?Forbes recently reported on the key causal relationship between employee happiness in their workplace and their general productivity, based on a US study by IZA World of Labor. Often people decide to change jobs because they simply arent happy with the day-to- day culture of their workplaces. Happy people - defined as people who frequently experience positive emotions like joy, satisfaction, contentment, enthusiasm, and interest - are more likely to succeed in their career, the study says. Before you leap onto another job role, take some time to consider exactly what makes you happy from a company culture point of view, and weigh up what you currently have with any new options that present themselves.3 How are my career progression prospects looking?Another big reason people desire to shift career is that they feel that their chances of promotion are slim where they are. Sometimes it can be easier to transition into a new role with a better title and better prospects than to stagnate where you are. But this is not always the case. If youre employed in a role where youre relatively secure, it pays to job seek (ethically, and never on company time) while still in your role, so you can test and sample the market before you leap. Get a good idea of what sort of roles might be out there, and assess the likely competition and what qualifications youll need before handing in your final notice.4 What personal factors will I be dealing with over the next few months that might affect my performance? When you transition to a new job in a different company, expect to be on a period of high engagement and eignungly higher stress for the first few months as you learn the ropes. If you have any personal commitments coming up that will take some of your focus off your job, carefully consider how these will play in with your new role. No one can predict the future, but it might be worth delaying a job change if you know youre about to undergo a major life event such as a health complication, getting married, new property purchase or family commitment having said that, if a new job role offers better security or better remuneration this might be another reason to push go on your plans to resign.5 Who will my referees be, and how i s my current relationship with them? Before you shift job roles, think about whos best to vouch for you in the job seeking process. When putting together your list of referees, its good to choose people from a few different areas of your life professional, academic and personal. However, unless a potential employer asks for a personal reference its best to stick to professional contacts.6 Who would mentor me in my new role?Mentors are important at all stages of your career, from when youre starting out, to heading for retirement, and every phase in between. Harvard Business Review found that executives who have had a mentor earn more money at a younger age, are better educated, are more likely to follow a career plan, and, in turn, sponsor more protgs than executives who have not had a mentor. Consider who youd be engaging with when youre researching new potential roles and potential organisations and factor this into your career change process. You might find that the chance to wo rk with or for someone you professionally admire might be a good reason to shift from your current job alternatively, if you admire someone on your current team who can assist you in growing your future job prospects, this might be another reason to stay in your present role.7 Ultimately what position will look better on my resume?Job hopping too frequently used to be considered a career killer but times have changed. There are now multiple studies that show job hoppers are more ambitious and have more rewarding and stable careers. But how often is too often? Consider how remaining in your current role will look on your resume, compared with starting a new path, and factor this into your decision-making process. Again, there is no right or wrong answer, but if youve had a history of changing several jobs in a row with less than 6 to 12 months of desk time, this might still be considered a red flag in certain industries, unless you can authentically back yourself up. The saatkorn go es for staying somewhere too long, and not gaining varied enough industry experience. Do your research before you transition, and dont be afraid of getting opinions from your networking group. This post was produced by guest blogger, Yvette McKenzie.
