Beyond just the shock of not automatically getting As law students have another worry Will these grades totally sink my legal career? Its a legitimate question, but theres no reason to panic. Many successful lawyers have been where you are right now and lived to tell the tale. Here are three suggestions for coping with disappointing first semester grades in law school What Happened? While its possible to recover from terrible grades and have a successful legal career, its easier to find a job when you grad uate if your grades arent consistently terrible. So, its time to figure out what went wrong first semester and correct it going forward. Step one is to get, and carefully examine, your exam answers, comparing them in form and content to any sample answers your prof handed out. Once youve done this, set up a meeting with your old professor to see what advice they can offer. (Some professors are reluctant to engage in such a conversation, but many are willing to help if you approach them with a constructive attitude and make it clear youre interested in improving your performance going forward, not in arguing about your grade from last semester.) Take any advice to heart and make changes in how you study this semester. If your professors arent willing to help, look for other resources. Your school might offer peer mentors or an academic support program. Worst case, consider hiring a law school tutor for a few sessions. Any input you can get is valuable, so dont be shy Ask around for help. Change How You Prepare If your grades werent great, its a sign that your preparation wasnt effective, so you need to change your approach going forward. There are lots of books on taking law school exams, so you can probably find one that makes sense to you. But dont expect different results if you prepare exactly as you did the first semester Its time to change it up. Focus on Your Career It might sound counterintuitive, but one way of handling disappointing grades is simply to ignore them and turn your attention to other matters. One of my law school roommates knew she wanted to do public interest work, where grades are less of a focus. So she simply didnt look at her grades She had a friend check to make sure she passed all of her classes, but then she focused her energy on securing relevant internships, doing pro bono work, and making connections in the area where she wanted to work. In the end, she had tons of job options, despite a less than stellar transcript, because people in the field knew her and respected her work. If your grades arent going to get you in the door, think about what will. Can you spend time blogging on a topic of interest to you? Or meeting lawyers who work in the area by volunteering for a bar association committee or joining a pro bono project? Ultimately, time spent on such activities can pay off far more than improving your grades from a B to a B. Getting bad first-semester law school grades is a shock, but its not the end of the world. That set a new record for fastest legged robot, a good five miles per hour faster than the old titleholder, a biped from MIT that hit 13 mph back in 1989.The DARPA-funded Cheetah is one of many creature-inspired robots the company has developed to make life on the battlefield easier for the foot soldier. Theres the building-hopping SandFlea the wall-climbing, lizard-like RiSE and RHex, which looks something like a six-legged platypus. The Cheetahs most direct ancestor is BigDog, a four-legged canine-esque machine meant to help infantrymen haul heavy loads.The BigDog, a four-legged canine, is the Cheetahs ancestor. The fastest legged robot and the fastest legged animal that shares the saatkorn name also share much of the same design, most notably in the spine. But the Cheetahs primary investigator, Marc Raibert, warns not to take the similarity between the Cheetah robot we built and the animal too far. We are not trying to copy the animal, just take inspiration from it. It is true that they both have four legs and use their backs to help speed up their running, but the differences are significant too most of the details are different.However different their details, both the beast and the bot face the same problem If you want to go fast, you cant go fast for long. Energetics is an organizing principle for both the robot and the animal, and for most vehicles, says Raibert. Generally, the more weight devoted to power generation and fuel, the more difficult it is to erleichterung and accelerate the system. If the Cheetah had more lung and heart, perhaps it could run longer, but it would probably have to give up some top speed. The next version of the Cheetah Robot will also have limited duration of operation to save on power weight, cooling weight, etc.Being overweight is not the only thing keeping the Cheetah from being sent out to attack. The titanium fangs and laser eyes that might make it truly terrifying to the enemy have yet to be installed. At the moment, the beast is missing a head, making the robot arguably more creepy than terrifying. It also requires an off-board hydraulic pump for power as well as a boom-like device to keep it from veering off its (as of now) rather straightforward course. Pretty soon, youre looking for a new thing to bring back that feeling of elation. This is sometimes called retail therapy. Status Anxiety Otherwise known as keeping up with the Joneses. You may love your three-year-old Honda, but a top-of-the-line BMW will make your neighbors green with envy. Use of this strategy has, if anything, increased in recent years with the proliferation of new-and-improved gadgets. That is why many people you know have traded in their perfectly good smartphones for new models that cost far more. Limiting Availability Creating artificial scarcity is a great way to boost demand. This is why many manufacturers produce limited-edition versions of their products to tie in with current movies or TV series. A little extra branding is applied to a product that isnt at all scarce- but the variation is. Nike produces limited-edition sneakers and people pay huge sums for them in the secondary market. Becoming Your Friend One way to create brand awareness is to make a product appear to have the endorsement of your own circle of friends, or at least people like your friends. Social media campaigns have done an extraordinary job of finessing this strategy with fun videos and messages encouraging you to interact with the brand message. These marketing campaigns are, of course, mixed in with posts from your real friends. When you next buy a certain product or service, guess which brand you reach for? Positive Association Brands love to associate themselves with the positive qualities that celebrities embody. Someone is always the baddest tough guy, the model with the most gorgeous hair, or the sports star with the fastest feet. Brands take this positive association and attach it indelibly to their products. One of the more subtle uses of this strategy is the product placement, in which a brand is inserted neatly but leid too unobtrusively into a movie or television show. Making You Laugh Why are so many Super Bowl ads funny? Why do so many social media marketing posts make you laugh? The answer is simple. Laughter is a positive emotion, and when you link a positive association with a brand, consumers are more likely to choose it. Even insurance companies and banks use humor, and these are not products that most of us want to entrust to a comedian. But humor works. It certainly is a more effective marketing tool than a plain recitation of facts. Humanizing Things and Animals Its known as anthropomorphism, and in advertising, its a surefire way to get you to sit up and take notice. Talking animals like the Geico gecko, the Aflac duck, and Tony the Tiger are prime examples. Its unexpected, its usually humor ous, and it encourages us to connect emotionally with the brand. Variations include giving human features to inanimate objects. A prosaic thing has become cute and likable. Sure you want to buy that thing. Reverse Psychology This strategy can be as obvious as Patagonias famous Dont Buy This Jacket ad, or more subtle, like the incredible Lemon ad for Volkswagen. In the latter example, they called their own car a lemon, but when you found out why, you wanted it more. This is intended to give the consumer a false sense of control and superiority. In effect, it says dont tell me what to do or think, Ill do that myself. Its a time-honored strategy for dealing with children, and it works just as well on adults. Sex Appeal Sex sells...it really does. And sexually charged imagery has been used to sell beer, cars, phones, clothing, cheeseburgers (looking at you, Carls Jr.), and even furniture. We all fall for it. Its a deeply natural response, and the fact that it usually has nothing to do with the product itself seems to have no impact whatsoever. The Emptiness Within No advertiser will tell you bluntly that your life is awful but it will be better if you buy this product. But they can suggest it, and they do. This technique often uses before-and-after images to dramatize just how much better someone like you feels after buying that new coat, watch, or car. Figuring out the ins and outs of your job description is only the tip of the iceberg- organizational culture, new personalities, and an unfamiliar office mean youre constantly learning new things. And while the adjustment period feels new and different for everyone, some of us struggle with feeling downright overwhelmed.If this sounds like you (and you have the bitten fingernails to prove it), weve gathered four ways to conquer your nerves and take these new experiences in stride.Wake Up EarlierEver notice how your hands clench the steering wheel when you have five minutes left for the last 15 of your commute? Know that sinking feeling when you miss your train and have to wait for the next one all too well?When you cut your commute too close and are rushing, you begin your day flustered and worried.
